title: Paradoxes of Life
date: Monday, 1 March 2010
time:23:30
Note: I wish everyone has the responsibility or at least a tad bit of inclination to post something voluntarily. It might just be a “hello” post, or a random “I-saw-you-with-someone-post” or at most “I-had-fun-at” post but alas I do not live a perfect world. The least I can say is that I’m happy the blog is updated at least once a month albeit the fact that I had to ask, plead and fish around for things (sometimes, really). So keep it up, keep it alive at least; breathe some life into this meager space that we share together, just for a moment longer :D

This might be my last post in this blog so let me write something worthy of an ex-5science1 student post, just this once.

We always hear the word “life” being tossed around all the time - to have a life, to breathe life, to give life, to save life – but have we ever wondered what it is? How funny and sometimes irrelevant ways we lead our life nowadays? And how paradoxical it is? Maybe not.

Life is, in fact, the most peculiar thing ever happened to us - not science and definitely not the fact that couches can be carcinogenic or the fact that the world is not getting any warmer at all. We were trained from young to strive for the best and to do well in education. The fact that University and College life makes us smarter and grant us the key to the world – money as the plus – was drilled deep into our mind since young. We have to do the best because we were told that only the best of the best, the ones with the best degree and qualification, can survive in this harsh world. But when we do finish our long educations we realize something incredible: “oh shit the world is nothing like school”. So why bother with education?

The fact that most of what we learnt at school has nothing to with real world is nothing new. It’s well known that even the longest and hardest common degree, M.D., is pretty much about memorizing facts, long practical hours and plain guesswork and what doctor does is not medical at all but just being monkeys, copying their predecessors and developing their own theories along the way. Isn’t that scary. But that, you see, is our life.

Nothing that we do is ever the thing that we want because simply we do not know what we want. We are all monkeys. Whether you believed in Darwinian Theory or you rebuke it fiercely, it’s easy to see that all we did and do is copying what we see and hear in this world, what is ‘hip’ and ‘in’ around us – monkey see monkey do.

When we heard that working as a doctor will save thousands of lives we want to be one but we didn’t think that more and more patients can’t afford such service. When we heard that being lawyers we will uphold the justice, we never consider the fact that we might defend the ones that obstruct the justice. We tell ourselves that such people do not deserve justice but we forget that we are not the ones to say who does and who doesn’t deserve justice.

But it’s easy to be cynical and to question everything. Life is difficult. Being thrown into a situation where money is our first priority is unavoidable. We need money, lots of them to live nowadays.

But wait, what do we need really to live? Food and water (and plenty of sex some will say). Do we need 6 dollar food and 2 dollar mineral water? Do we need 3 stories house with huge lush garden? Must we have 20k cars and 1k phone? No. But that is life! If we don’t have it we are not ‘living’. But then again with debts trailing it’s not life too. HA!

We never think properly of life because such is not the privilege of our life. All we have to do is move forward, move on with our “life”. But, sadly, we forget one very important thing in life: we will die. That is what life is, to die; simple and concise. We live to die, but few willing to embrace it. Some of us will spend thousands just to live a moment longer, to do what exactly? To spend time with your “family”? But you had your whole life to do just that! Clearly you do not have a life.

The list of paradoxes in our life goes on and on but I know none will read this because we are all too busy living our ‘life’.

Cheerio.

No hard feelings, eh?
